Exotic Escapes

Iceland is the world’s largest volcanic island. Its 30 active volcanoes generate one-third of the world’s land-based lava. It is an island on fire. But while Iceland was built by volcanoes, it was sculpted by ice. About 1.5 million years ago, a massive sheet of ice descended from the north and covered the island. Today, massive glaciers, which cover 11 per cent of the island, continue to carve marine cliffs and cut down mountains. Glacial rivers feed thundering waterfalls powerful enough to fracture solid rock. But as global temperatures rise and glaciers melt, what will become of Iceland?
